Common Issues
Why does it need “Always” location access?
Whereabouts counts your days automatically by checking your location in the background. Without “Always” access it can only record while the app is open, and your day counts will have gaps. Your location history never leaves your iPhone.
The app says tracking is disconnected
Open the app once to reconnect. If it keeps happening, check that Location is set to “Always” in iOS Settings → Whereabouts, and that Background App Refresh is on.
Does it drain my battery?
No. Whereabouts uses Apple’s significant-change location service, which relies on cell towers and Wi-Fi rather than continuous GPS. Most days it uses a negligible amount of power.
How do I get my data out?
Settings (gear icon) → Export CSV. You’ll get every recorded location fix with its date, coordinates, and state or country — handy for your accountant.
Is a day counted in two states?
If you touch two states in one calendar day, the day counts for both — the “any part of a day” rule most tax jurisdictions use.
